Western Saddle Fitting

Finding the right western saddle doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Explore saddle fit basics, common warning signs, and helpful buying tips.

Every horse is built differently, every rider has unique preferences, and even the same horse can change shape over time due to age, fitness, training, or seasonal condition changes.

At Rein It In, we regularly work with riders buying, selling, and consigning saddles, so we hear many questions about saddle fit. While we do not provide professional saddle fitting services or guarantee the fit of any saddle, we've gathered some general information that may help you better understand the basics of saddle fit and recognize when further evaluation may be beneficial.

The information below is intended as a general educational guide only and should not replace the advice of a qualified saddle fitter, veterinarian, or equine professional familiar with your horse's individual needs.

Correct Saddle Fit

A properly fitting saddle may contribute to:

  • A horse that appears relaxed and willing to work
  • More comfortable rides for both horse and rider
  • Improved rider balance and position
  • Freedom of movement through the horse's shoulders and back
  • Reduced pressure points and friction

If you've found a saddle that works particularly well for both you and your horse, consider recording its measurements, model, tree size, and manufacturer specifications. This information can be invaluable if you need to replace or upgrade your saddle in the future.

Does My Saddle Fit my Horse?

A saddle may warrant further evaluation if you notice:

  • Difficulty maintaining balance in the seat
  • Rider discomfort during or after riding
  • Changes in your horse's behavior under saddle
  • Resistance during saddling or mounting
  • Restricted movement or shortened stride

It's important to remember that these signs can have many possible causes and do not automatically indicate a saddle-fitting problem. Training issues, physical discomfort, health concerns, and environmental factors may also contribute.

Physical Signs That May Suggest Saddle Fit Concerns

Some indicators that may warrant professional assessment include:

  • Pressure sores
  • White hairs developing under saddle contact areas
  • Swelling after riding
  • Scar tissue or hardened areas
  • Muscle loss around the withers or back
  • Hair rubs or unusual wear patterns

Behavioral Signs Worth Investigating

Some horses experiencing discomfort may:

  • Resist being saddled
  • Move away during mounting
  • Show sensitivity when brushed or touched along the back

Again, these signs can have multiple causes. If concerns persist, consulting with a veterinarian, qualified saddle fitter, or equine bodyworker may help identify the source of the problem.

Time for a new saddle

Whether you're looking for a custom saddle, a brand-new saddle, or a quality used saddle, the options can seem endless.

That's where Rein It In can help.

We offer a continually changing selection of western saddles through our consignment program and can help you compare models, sizes, brands, and features. While we cannot guarantee saddle fit or provide professional fitting services, we're always happy to answer questions about the saddles we have available and help you find options that may be worth exploring for your horse.

As always, we recommend that any saddle be evaluated on the individual horse before making a final decision.
